Welcome to the 2026 season of Sunday Coffee Concerts at Spring Bank Arts.

We’re delighted to welcome back many familiar faces and bring you a varied repertoire of concerts including some lesser-known works by English and Czech composers alongside the great Romantic composers Brahms and Dvořák.

First up on March 8th is a wonderful programme of works for string ensemble. Vaughan Williams wrote his Phantasy Quintet in 1912 for a composition award. It highlights his love of both Renaissance English music and folk music. Coupled with this piece is the great string sextet opus 36 by Brahms - a work full of longing, melancholy and joy in which he enshrines the name of one of his great loves, Agathe, in musical notation.

On April 19th we perform a programme of music for oboe and string trio which includes a rarely performed work by Czech composer Jiří Družecký who was a contemporary of Mozart. Alongside this will be two English works – a short and rarely heard piece in two movements by Elgar, and a haunting and atmospheric Fantasy Quartet by the Anglo-Irish composer Ernest Moeran, which draws on the folk melodies of Norfolk where he grew up.

In the final concert of the series on May 10th we feature works for piano trio by two great Czech composers, Martinů and Dvořák. The five Bergerettes by Martinů were composed while he was in the USA. They contain many quirky folk rhythms drawing on his Czech heritage interspersed with slower, melodic fragments. Dvořák’s famous trio opus 90 carries the subtitle “Dumky” which describes the style of all six of its movements, a dumka being a Slavic folk song marked by abrupt changes from melancholic to joyful. This is a wonderfully dramatic work full of sweeping melodies and catchy dance rhythms.

Performers this year include string players:  Caroline Pether, Rosemary Attree, Marie Schreer, Alistair Vennart, Raymond Lester, Chris Emerson, Nicholas Trygstad and Dale Culliford. We welcome back Stéphane Rancourt on oboe, and Paul Janes on piano.
